Casa da Bica is a restored fisherman’s house in the historic centre of Olhão, and the restoration was done with the history of the house in mind. The bones of the old house are still here — the thick walls that keep the rooms cool through the hottest afternoons, the sense that generations of a fishing family once measured their days from these very rooms. What’s been added is comfort, not spectacle: clean lines, good light, and the kind of calm that makes you unpack slowly. The house has 2 + 1 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. kitchen/dining space, a patio and 2 terraces of which one rooftop terrace with plunge pool. From the rooftop the views over the town are a delight. The decoration is our finest realisation sofar. We scouted and searched for furniture during more than 6 months and we are very proud how it has turned out.
The name is part of the charm. A bica is a water spout — the communal fountain where, not so long ago, a whole neighbourhood came to fill their jugs and swap the day’s news. It’s a fitting name for a house that still feels woven into the life of its street rather than sealed off from it.
The town that fish built
Olhão grew up around its fisherman’s port, and it has never stopped being a working fishing town. That’s exactly what makes it special. While much of the Algarve was built for visitors, Olhão was built for itself — and you feel the difference the moment you arrive.
The heart of it all is the pair of red-brick market halls on the waterfront, some of the finest in Portugal. Come in the morning, especially on a Saturday, and you’ll find the whole town there: one hall for fish so fresh it was swimming at dawn, the other for fruit, vegetables, cheeses, and flowers. Pull up a chair at a café afterwards, order a coffee, and watch the day get going.
The old quarter behind the market is a maze worth getting lost in. The distinctive cube houses with their flat roof terraces — the açoteias — reflect centuries of trade and contact across the water with North Africa, giving Olhão an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the region. It’s a place to wander without a plan.
Where the Ria Formosa begins
Step out of your front door and you’re minutes from the water — and this is no ordinary stretch of coast. Olhão is the gateway to the Ria Formosa, a vast lagoon of channels, salt marsh, and sandbars protected as a natural park and alive with flamingos, herons, and countless other birds.
From the quayside, small ferries run out to the barrier islands: Armona, Culatra, Farol. These are the Algarve’s secret beaches — long, quiet ribbons of soft sand where the only soundtrack is the wind and the waves. Spend the day, eat clams at a shack by the harbour, and catch the boat home as the light turns gold.
A day, unhurried
The rhythm of a stay at Casa da Bica writes itself. Coffee on a quiet morning. A walk to the market to gather whatever looks good. A ferry to an island beach, or an afternoon simply drifting through the lanes with an ice cream. And in the evening, the best part of all: a table at one of Olhão’s seafood restaurants, where the fish came off a boat you can probably see from your seat, and a glass of chilled white wine as the town settles into the night.
You don’t come to Olhão to tick off sights. You come to slow down, eat astonishingly well, and feel — for a few days — like you live here.
